SS United States
Built in 1951, and just under a thousand feet long, it still holds the world record for the fastest ocean going vessel to cross the Atlantic Ocean in both directions. It was built in secret by the US government during the Cold war to be a troop carrier disguised as a ocean liner. I knew somebody who was on the marine architects team at Newport News ship building. He was on the ship during the sea trials, and said the three other Navy ships that were escorting her couldn’t keep up with them. It was kept secret, but with only using 3/4 power, the ship went well over 45 knots during the trials.
